CN-8: Mexican vintage straw-art (popote art or popotillo), a pair of straw-art scenes depicting a lovely China Poblana and her valiant Charro with his guitar, Mexico, c. 1930's. The scenes are created using thousands of minute pieces of dyed straw or grass (popote, in Spanish). The two figures are wonderful: their costumes, including wonderful sombreros decorated with foil, are spectacular, and the faces of the two are beautiful! Condition is very good. Size: each measures 14 inches high by 7 inches wide, including frames.

CD-3: Mexican vintage straw-art (popote art or popotillo), and Mexican vintage folk art, a lovely straw-art picture depicting a Mexican village in the shadow of the volcano, Popocateptl, Puebla, c. 1920. The work is almost certainly by the famous Gabriel Olay (G. Olay), given the fineness of the straw-art, the geometrical popote border, and the description of the scene on the bottom front. A stamp on the back of the framed picture indicates that the piece was purchased from the shop of the famous photographer Edward Weston, whose curio store in Mexico City was open between 1918 to c. 1923. The scene is composed of thousands of very fine pieces of dyed grass or straw (popote, in Spanish), an incredibly labor-intensive and beautiful art-form which predates the arrival of the Spanish in the America's. Condition is very good. Size: 10 1/2 inches wide by 8 3/4 inches high, including the frame. The popote art itself is 8 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches high. Price: $725.

Popote art is created using thousands of very small pieces of dyed straw (popote, in Spanish). This is a very labor-intensive process, and the results are stunningly beautiful! The members of the famous Olay family are considered among the best artists in this art form. Condition is very good. Size: the popote art picture itself is 7 1/2 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches high. The size, including the wooden frame is 14 1/4 inches wide by 17 inches high. Price: $675.

The actual popote art scene, not including the mat and frame, is 8 1/2 inches high by 6 1/2 inches wide. Price: $675.

The scene is of a Mexican campesino traveling through the lovely village of Taxco. This Mexican art-form is truly wonderful! Condition is very good. Size: the popote art within the larger, hand-carved wooden frame measures 6 3/4 inches high by 4 3/4 inches wide. Price: $395.

Colors are wonderfully vibrant. A woman is rowing her craft, filled with lovely flowers; it would seem to be a scene of Xochimilco. Popotillo is a Mexican art-form; scenes of traditional Mexican life are created using thousands of pieces of dyed straw or grass (popote, in Spanish). Condition is excellent. Size: the popote scene itself (without the mat and frame) measures 8 3/4 inches wide by 6 3/4 inches high. Price: $475.
