The nicho is very finely made, with good stamping and a reverse-decorated glass border, and the tin retablo is beautifully painted. The original image of Nuestra Senora de Atocha, holding the Santo Nino, was brought from Spain to the church in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, soon after the Conquest of Mexico by the Spanish (1519-21). The legend holds that, in the quiet of night, the Santo Nino would leave his Mother and the church, and would bring food and drink to the weary miners toiling in the silver mines in Zacatecas. A very strong devotion to the Nino developed, a devotion which made its way to Texas and New Mexico via trade caravans on the Camino Real, which passed through Fresnillo. The Santo Nino is pictured seated, with a Spanish-style hat and dress, and holds a basket with food and a pole with a gourd for water.
